To reupholster car seat, renovate car seat, replace foam in car seat and restoring the comfort of an older sports car are some of the most common services we perform. When the owner of a Dellow MK1 from 1950 When they contacted us, it was clear that the job involved more than just a worn-out seat—it was about restoring the car's soul, feel, and historical identity.
In this particular project, we were able to combine traditional craftsmanship with modern sustainability. Our work involved:
remove old and decaying foam
build a completely new padding from scratch for better comfort
shape the cushions according to adjusted and correct original measurements
reupholster the seat with durable leather, vehicle-grade material
continue working on a new wooden seat that the customer had cut out with great precision from existing picture frames
manufacture a completely new, tailor-made seat cushion adapted for one of the most iconic British sports cars from the 1950s
This is a perfect example of how we combine customer engagement with our craftsmanship to create a result that is both authentic and sustainable.
The starting point – broken foam, worn upholstery, and an uncomfortable car seat
A unique part of this project:
The customer built one himself new tree planks, exactly according to the original dimensions for the Dellow MK1.
This gave us:
a perfect foundation
exact height, width, and contour
original style down to the smallest millimeter
We often work like this:
If the customer wants to contribute to part of the process—for example, building a wooden base, door panels, or measuring templates—we will adapt accordingly.
This means that:
- the result becomes more personal
- the customer feels involved
- costs can be more efficient
- we can devote more time to advanced craftsmanship
Step-by-step – how we refurbished the car seat on the Dellow MK1
Step 1 – Review of old foam and original mold
First, we analyzed:
- where the foam had collapsed
was it too hard or completely gone
how the seat carried the body from the beginning
what shape was needed to get back the right driving feel
The old foam always tells the story of how the car has been used.
Step 2 – Removal of all old foam
To properly renovate a car seat, all old material must be removed:
- loose foam
- lumps
- pressed parts
- material that has absorbed moisture
- mold-affected parts
We removed everything down to the customer's wooden seat.
This is the basis for a quality job.
Step 3 – New padding: rebuilding the seat from scratch
Now the real craftsmanship began:
we chose high-density foam for vehicles
cut into slices of the right thickness
glued them step by step
began to build up the right volume, height, and contour
New padding is what gives:
- comfort
- sustainability
- correct position
It's much more than just “foam.”.
Step 4 – Shaping, grinding, and curve adjustment
Once the filling was in place, we shaped it:
corner
contours
slope
edges
rounds
We tested it several times and made adjustments until everything felt perfect.
Vintage cars rarely have exact angles—everything is a little unique.
Step 5 – Pattern cutting and cutting out the fabric
Now we came up with:
pattern
panel layout
cutting lines
seam placement
This is similar to our work with boat cushions:
The fit must be exact.
Step 6 – Sewing and fitting new upholstery
We sewed the upholstery in vehicle-rated material that can withstand:
UV light
heat
wear
moisture
use for many years
The seams were reinforced for extra durability.
After sewing, we assembled the upholstery:
stretched it
adjusted panels
locked it under the wooden seat
The result was a sleek, stylish finish.
Step 7 – Fitting and final check
We concluded with:
-
trial sitting
-
seam inspection
-
symmetry check
-
stability test
-
visual review
Only when everything was perfect was the seat ready.
The end result – new seat cushions with a classic feel and modern comfort
The renovation resulted in a completely new seat, built from scratch but with full respect for the historic design of the Dellow MK1. The new cushion now has:
perfect shape and fit
classic original feel, just like in 1950
modern comfort with high-density foam
clean, sleek, and durable upholstery
significantly longer service life than the original
The end result was not just a refurbished seat cushion—it was a revitalized part of the car, where the feel, comfort, and appearance now match the car's dignity and history.
The customer was overjoyed—and it's easy to understand why. For many owners of older sports cars and vintage cars, the seat is one of the most important parts of the entire driving experience. When you sit right, when it feels right, and when the seat supports your body well, the car comes alive again.
If you are sitting in a car there:
the padding has collapsed
the foam is old
the upholstery has cracked
the comfort has disappeared
the original feeling has been lost
... then a renovation can make a huge difference.

Why renovate a car seat instead of buying a new one?
The short answer is simple:
An original refurbished car seat preserves both the feel and the value of the car.
Unlike purchasing a universal seat or aftermarket seat, with a refurbishment you get:
Original fit
The car's interior retains its period style – which is crucial for vintage cars and enthusiast cars.
Higher car value
Properly refurbished seats increase value significantly more than newly manufactured universal solutions.
Better comfort
New foam and correct shaping mean that the seat is more comfortable than the original – but looks the same.
Longer service life
The right foam, the right upholstery, and the right craftsmanship mean that the seat lasts much longer than it did when the car was new.
A seat built specifically for you
Not mass-produced – handmade and tailor-made.
For a car model such as the Dellow MK1, it is also absolutely essential. The original fit cannot be purchased, ordered, or replaced.
If you are wondering what would be best for your car, we recommend that you send us some photos.
